TRANSPORT
It's ALL about the journey...
What's the problem?
-
The transport industry is now the largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the UK, forming just over a quarter of emissions.
-
71% of emissions in the transport sector globally can be attributed to road users.
-
The transport sector is a main source of air pollution, which is a serious cause of health problems in the UK.
What difference does my flight make?
-
A domestic flight such as the one from Edinburgh to London (return) produces 202g of CO2 per km traveled. That's over three times what the train would produce.
-
According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), aviation contributes around 2% of global carbon emissions.
-
The aviation industry is predicted to double in the next 17 years.
What you can do about it:
-
Travelling by railways instead of flying can cut carbon emissions by a THIRD (Plus have you seen the views of the east coast from the London > Edinburgh train route?!)
-
Consider holidaying locally rather than going abroad – lower travel distances mean lower emissions.
-
Use public or active transport. Try walking or cycling instead of driving – not only is it better for the planet, its healthier too!
-
Public transport is about to get even more sustainable in the UK, as bus firms have promised to convert to low- or zero-emission vehicles in the next few years.
-
Where you need to drive, consider carpooling so that less cars end up on the road.
