I made my own oat milk and you can too

Not only is this recipe super cheap in comparison to supermarket options and quick to make, it also helps you to cut down your consumption of single use plastics. What’s not to love?

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of rolled oats

  • 3-4 cups of water (depending on how thick you want the consistency to be)

  • A pinch of salt

  • Some kind of sweetener (such as a few pitted dates or a dash of vanilla extract)

Method:

  1. Whack all the ingredients in a high-speed blender (a hand blender also works) for 30-45 seconds.

  2. Strain the milk through a clean T-shirt or towel. I personally use an old cotton pillowcase because it acts like a bag, making it easier to contain and squeeze the liquid without any escaping. Really get in there and use your hands to squeeze out as much oaty goodness as possible.

  3. Store the milk in the fridge in a sealed container or bottle.

  4. The milk lasts up to five days in the fridge. Separation is natural so if this occurs, just give it a good old shake up.

Top tips:

  • Be careful not to blend the oats too long or soak them before blending as this can make the milk slimy.

  • If you have the time, I would recommend straining the milk through twice as this makes it creamier.

  • Cheesecloth is often recommended for straining but reusing fabrics from home saves you having to buy new.

  • You can also get funky with the flavours by adding things like berries or cacao powder.
